Yesterday, at the Indian launch event of the ASUS ZenFone Max M2 and ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M2, ASUS also presented forth the timeline for Android Pie update for its devices. While it was a bit disappointing seeing the new devices launched with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box, Asus has promised that Android 9 Pie update for the ZenFone Max M2 and the Max Pro M2 will arrive in January 2019, which isn’t all that far away.
Even though Asus has launched its new budget and early mid-range lineup, the company hasn’t forgotten about the previous generation ZenFone Max Pro M1. The device has been confirmed to receive the Android 9 Pie update, but the update will arrive in February 2019, after the updates for its newer devices has rolled out. This is a little disappointing too, considering the fact that the Max Pro M1 runs a stock Android build without a lot of extra frills or a funky UX, so updating the phone would require comparatively lesser effort. However, better late than never in this case, we still hope the device does receive the update as per Asus’s promised timeline.
The ASUS ZenFone 5Z, the company’s current flagship, is also slated to receive its Android 9 Pie update by the end of January 2019. Competing devices around the price range, like the OnePlus 6/OnePlus 6T and the Xiaomi POCO F1 have already received their update. Again, Asus is lagging behind the competition, which takes some of the edge off of its flagship device.
Nonetheless, the current generation Asus devices, especially the ones launched in 2018, have generated considerable interest from the intended demographics i.e. the average consumer not looking to spend too much on a phone. Providing the latest update quicker would have certainly added to Asus’s track record, but as long as the updates do arrive within their promised timelines, most of their consumers would be content enough to give the company a pass. We hope Asus keeps its word in 2019.
