Possible Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 (6GB RAM) render shows off a notched display

In the Indian budget and mid-range market, Xiaomi smartphones reign supreme. Xiaomi’s Redmi Note series, soon to be joined by the Redmi Note 6 Pro in India, are hard to beat in the price conscious Indian market. But the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 has been a serious contender for best mid-range smartphone in India when it was launched earlier this year. With a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636, up to 6GB RAM/64GB storage, a 5.99-inch 1080×2160 LCD, dual 13+5MP rear cameras, 5,000mAh battery, and near stock Android 8.1 Oreo, the ZenFone Max Pro M1 seems like the perfect smartphone for an Indian XDA user on a budget. We’ve heard rumors that Asus is gearing up to launch the ZenFone Max Pro M2, and now the device has appeared online with what may be the first press render showing off its notched display.

A few days ago, notable leaked Roland Quandt from WinFuture tweeted some possible specifications for the upcoming Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2. Among the specifications he posted included the CPU, display size, RAM, storage, and the number of rear cameras. Now, a smartphone with the name ZenFone Max Pro M2 from Asus with a model name of ASUS_X01BD_1 has been published to the Google Play Console’s device catalog. While there’s no guarantee the information in the listing is correct since the Google Play Console notes that “device specifications are provided by the manufacturer and have not been confirmed,” the specifications match up with history and current rumors. First, here’s the low resolution render provided by Asus to Google:

Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2

There’s not much you can see here, unfortunately. There’s a display notch, of course, which looks like what’s on the Asus ZenFone 5Z. We can see from the icons that the device is running near stock Android, though it looks like Asus just lifted the same background from the submission of the ZenFone Max Pro M1.

The Play Console listing also has some of the purported specifications for the device, such as that the device has 6GB RAM. Asus likely has a 4GB RAM model in the works, but that one wasn’t submitted to Google. It’s also possible that the 6GB RAM in the listing is incorrect, but given that Asus has previously released a 6GB RAM model of the ZenFone Max Pro M1 we’re inclined to believe that they’ll repeat themselves with the ZenFone Max Pro M2. Lastly, the device is said to be running Android 8.1 Oreo. The ZenFone Max Pro M2 may launch with Android Pie but that’s not what Asus submitted here. Again, take the specifications with a grain of salt since even Google says they were provided by the manufacturer and could be wrong—like what happened with the Razer Phone 2’s early appearance on the Play Console. However, the Razer Phone 2’s model name (aura) and render ended up being correct, so we’re possibly getting an early look at the upcoming ZenFone Max Pro M2.
