The Motorola One was launched in August 2018 with a 5.9″ HD+ display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC, 4GB RAM, 64GB internal storage with expandability options, a 3,000 mAh battery, USB Type-C, a 3.5mm headphone jack and best of all, near-stock Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box thanks to the Android One program. Lenovo/Motorola promised two major Android version updates (to Android Pie and Android Q) on top of three years of guaranteed monthly security patches starting from September 2018. While this feature set definitely does not compete with flagships, the Motorola One gives budget users (outside of the U.S.) a good option if they wanted a no-frills stock Android experience.
Lenovo is now coming through with one part of their promise, as Motorola One users on our forums are reporting that the device is receiving its Android Pie update. Users in Mexico are the first to receive this update, and we expect other regions to receive the update soon as well. This update comes on the heels of the Motorola One Power receiving its Android Pie update in India just a few days ago.
The update with build number PPK29.68-16-8 bumps up the device to Android 9 Pie, and the security patch level to November 1, 2018. The base version shows “DEEN” which is the code-name for the Motorola One, along with “LATAM” which is the Latin American regional build. With Android Pie, you get improved battery life, a new UI with redesigned Quick Settings and a revamped split-screen, Android Pie gesture navigation, simplified volume controls, and an improved Do Not Disturb mode.
