Smart Displays are the latest frontier for Google Assistant. Back in January, a few companies were announced to release Google Assistant devices with touchscreens. Lenovo and JBL were the first to market, followed by Google releasing their own device last month. LG was also mentioned at the time and they have finally announced their device, the “LG XBOOM AI ThinQ WK9.”
LG’s Smart Display puts an emphasis on the audio. They partnered with Meridian Audio to deliver HiFi sound quality. It has front-facing 20W speakers, which we have not seen on a device like this. In the middle of those speakers is an 8-inch touchscreen (they do not specify the screen resolution). Also, since this is an LG device in 2018, it has all of their ThinQ AI capabilities. The device can communicate with other LG ThinQ products such as TVs and appliances.
Since this is a Google Assistant device, it can do all of the same things as the Google Home Hub. It will always get the same updates and features as Google’s own devices. You can watch videos on the display, get step-by-step recipe instructions, cast music, get answers, broadcast messages to other devices, and much more. The display adds another level of functionality to Google Assistant.
With the HiFi sound in mind, the LG XBOOM AI ThinQ WK9 is the most expensive Smart Display on the market. The eventual price will be $299, but to kick things off for the Holiday season, they are offering it for $199. That’s only $50 more than the Google Home Hub and the same price as the Lenovo Smart Display. If audio is important to you, that’s a good price.
The device is currently listed on LG’s website and B&H Photo, though we don’t know when it will officially go on sale. One thing we do know is it will be available in the U.S. first. Are you interested in this LG Smart Display?
