Earlier this week it was just announced that OnePlus was looking for 100 closed beta testers for OxygenOS on the OnePlus 6T. The company does a closed beta test for their Chinese version of Android as well, HydrogenOS, and they recently began testing the Android Pie version of it on the OnePlus 5 and the OnePlus 5T. Incidentally, the HydrogenOS firmware was leaked for the OnePlus 5T which can actually still be installed on global versions of it. In fact, it can be installed on the global OnePlus 5 as well (but the fingerprint scanner doesn’t work). Whether the closed beta test was finished, or they just decided the cat was out of the bag anyway, OnePlus is now allowing the public to beta test the Android Pie version of HydrogenOS for the OnePlus 5 and the OnePlus 5T.
With OnePlus being based in China, it makes sense for them to develop new versions of HydrogenOS first. Not only does it have support for fewer languages, but it also doesn’t come with the Google Play Store pre-installed. This allows them to bring up the code for the new update while also adding in some OnePlus specific features to the software. It also lets us monitor the company’s progress because if they are now beginning to public test the HydrogenOS version for the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T then the OxygenOS version isn’t that far behind.
Naturally, we don’t have an ETA as to when we can expect the first public beta of OxygenOS for these two devices, but this does show that we are getting closer. Not only that, but we also get a full list of changes that have been made to the HydrogenOS public beta build. Once translated we can see the following changes:
