HMD Global’s launch event has been hyped up to a great extent, which was helped by the fact that nobody knew what exactly it was that the company was going to release. Was it going to be the Nokia 9, complete with its penta-camera setup? Or was it going to be the Nokia 7.1, a device that many expected to arrive in the coming months regardless? Turns out it was the Nokia 7.1, and, even better, it’s part of the Android One program as well. HMD Global says they focused on three key pillars in designing the Nokia 7.1 – design, performance, and the best of what Google has to offer.

Nokia 7.1 Design
The Nokia 7.1 comes in two colors – Gloss Midnight Blue and Gloss Steel. The design is inspired by jewelry, made from one piece of aluminum and 2.5D curved edges. It’s got a glass front and back and places great emphasis on being a compact smartphone. Users often dislike glass backs as they increase the chances of visual damage happening to your phone if you drop it, however, they are also a hallmark trait of more premium devices.
The Nokia 7.1 is part of the Android One program
The Nokia 7.1 is being made part of the Android One program, a potentially big deal to many. While it doesn’t mean updates will come directly from Google, Android One smartphones are held to a higher standard than normal Android phones. They run basically stock Android, and part of the promise of Android One is that your phone will get quicker updates and security patches than the rest. HMD Global notes that the Nokia 7.1 launches with Android Oreo, but will be upgradeable to Android Pie “by the end of November.” The device will also be a part of Android Enterprise Recommended.
The Nokia 7.1 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC and 3GB or 4GB of RAM
The Nokia 7.1 features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 system-on-chip clocked at 1.8GHz. It’s one of Qualcomm’s best mid-range chipsets, and one of their most efficient as well. Because of that, you should expect to get some excellent battery life along with some great performance. HMD Global mentions that the Nokia 7.1 has a special chip created in tandem with a company called PixelWorks, which is how it supports HDR10. It can even convert regular content to HDR10, and that applies to games as well. There are two RAM variants – 3GB or 4GB. The 4GB of RAM (paired with 64GB of storage) will be the only one available in the US.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 boasts a 40% improvement of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 included in the Nokia 7.
The Nokia 7.1 has a notched Pure Display LCD with HDR10 support
The Nokia 7.1 is the first HMD Global smartphone to boast their new “Pure Display” technology, which brings HDR10 support to phones that don’t necessarily have flagship specifications. This is thanks to the aforementioned chip made by PixelWorks, which can convert all content to the standard HDR format – HDR10.
The display is also an adaptive one – that is, it adjusts the display based on your surroundings to conserve energy. What exactly that means hasn’t been confirmed yet.
Nokia 7.1 camera features
The camera is where HMD Global prides itself on the Nokia 7.1. While it’s nothing special on paper, it features a 12MP f/1.8 ZEISS shooter with a 5MP secondary sensor for depth perception. HMD Global also revealed that this smartphone supports Live Bokeh, a feature found on its flagships such as the Nokia 8. Live Bokeh presents the user with a slider so that they can change the amount of blur when taking a bokeh shot.
Other announcements
They also showed off the Nokia Pro Wireless Earphones and Nokia True Wireless Earbuds. The Pro earphones are connected behind your neck and are geared more towards activity. The True earbuds are completely independent Bluetooth earbuds with a charging case.
