Wear OS isn’t the most popular operating system around, but enough smartwatches run it that larger companies tend to at least release a version of their app that supports it. Spotify is one of those companies, however, it was very much apparent that the app existed simply so that the company could say that they had one. It’s not the most feature-fledged and it’s rarely updated. The app didn’t support Discover Weekly playlists, for example. However, the company has announced that they have entirely revamped their app – complete with Spotify Connect support.
In the same announcement, the company also said that they were collaborating with Fossil to pre-install the standalone application on new Fossil Gen 4 and Michael Kors Access Runway smartwatches. While there has always been a Wear OS Spotify application, it was never really been capable of much. You could access your library and play songs on your phone (provided the app was running) but that was about it. Once the music was playing, you could control the volume, skip tracks and pause or play. The previous app did not have Spotify Connect support, which enables you to connect to your computer, smart speakers, Chromecast, and more. You’ll also be able to directly save songs to your library as well, simply by tapping the heart.
“We’re excited to bring improved on-the-go-access to your favorite music and podcasts to millions of Spotify users on Wear OS by Google smartwatches,” says Mikael Ericsson, Senior Product Director at the company. “Being able to easily access, control, and connect music directly from your wrist opens up a world of new opportunities. We look forward to continuing to improve the Spotify experience in this space.”
The new app will be rolling out to Wear OS users over the coming week and will bring all of the newly announced features to your smartwatch. You can download the Spotify application from the Google Play Store below.
