Android 9 Pie is a major update to Android. It comes with many new features and design changes such as a new Material Theme, Digital Wellbeing, Adaptive Battery, and a lot more. Google rolled out Android Pie for the Google Pixel/XL and the Google Pixel 2/XL back in August. Some device makers have proven more adept in rolling out updates for their smartphones. Essential, for example, rolled out the update on the same day of release to the Essential Phone. OnePlus rolled out OxygenOS 9.0 for the OnePlus 6 soon after, and Xiaomi is now rolling out Android Pie for the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S. On the other hand, device makers such as Motorola have been content to release only a list of devices that will receive Pie. Unsurprisingly, Sony is somewhere in between.
Sony released a list of devices due to receive Pie two months ago. The company then rolled out the Android Pie update to the Sony Xperia XZ2 and the Xperia XZ2 Compact, while the Sony Xperia XZ2 is actually the first Android phone to launch with Android 9 Pie out of the box. Now, Sony has revealed the roll-out schedule for the Android Pie update. It will be arriving on a few smartphones earlier than the previously revealed timeline of November.
To be precise, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium, Sony Xperia XZ1, and Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact will receive Android Pie from October 26. Owners of the Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium will be receiving it from November 7. If the company lives up to its roll-out schedule, it will deserve praise for rolling out Android Pie in a relatively timely manner.
However, the news isn’t that great for owners of Sony’s mid-range phones. The Sony Xperia XA2, Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra, and the Sony Xperia XA2 Plus will only start receiving the update from March 4, 2019, which is nearly five months from now. It’s disappointing to see, but it’s not unexpected. Regrettably, mid-range phones are typically given a lower priority for updates by device makers, who choose to focus on flagship phones. It doesn’t seem as if this fact will be changing for Sony this generation.
