OnePlus has had a troubled history with software updates, most notably leaving the OnePlus 2 on Android Marshmallow, but they’ve been dutifully updating the OnePlus 3 onward. The company launched their Open Beta program with the OnePlus 3 and now updates the OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T, OnePlus 5, OnePlus 5T, and OnePlus 6 fairly regularly. With an update to Android Pie on the horizon for the OnePlus 3 and a software maintenance schedule in play for all of the company’s smartphones, it’s no surprise to see the company’s latest flagship device receive another update. The OnePlus 6 is getting OxygenOS Open Beta 5 and it comes with the latest October security patches.
Admittedly, it’s not a huge update. As the changelog mentions, the security patch has been updated to October 2018, while the UI for the power off menu has changed slightly. The screenshotting interface has apparently changed a little bit too. These changes are likely in preparation for the new UI update coming when the OnePlus 6T launches. It’s assumed that there are other improvements under the hood as well.
The update is rolling out now, but if you don’t want to wait then you can download the latest version of OxygenOS Open Beta via the Oxygen Updater application. It’ll allow you to download and flash the latest version of OxygenOS, and it doesn’t even require root. If you’d rather wait, however, then you may be waiting quite a while. You can’t use a VPN to get updates on your OnePlus device anymore, as the company switched to using a per-device roll-out method rather than by country. The full update zip comes in at 1.5GB, which you’ll have to download if you’ve made any modifications to your OnePlus 6 whatsoever. If you have, don’t forget to root your device again after.
