OnePlus is doing a great job at providing updates for its smartphones. With the surprise announcement of Android Pie for the OnePlus 3/3T and Project Treble support announced for the OnePlus 5/OnePlus 5T, the company is doing very well at keeping a good reputation when it comes to software updates. With their somewhat-recently announced software maintenance schedule, there’s a guarantee of updates for every device released by the company. OxygenOS 5.1.6 is here and it brings Project Treble support and VoLTE for IDEA India. You can check out the full changelog below.

Project Treble support is the biggest addition here, as it allows developers to boot a generic Android image. It means OEMs can update their devices faster (in theory) while also allowing custom ROM developers to develop for any Project Treble supported device out there. Project Treble is such a great thing for custom ROM developers that it allowed an obscure, MediaTek-powered smartphone without any kernel sources to run AOSP. OnePlus devices have always been great for custom development, so those with the OnePlus 5 or the OnePlus 5T should be ecstatic. We already knew OnePlus was working on this, however, when it was first introduced in the Open Betas many months ago. Interestingly, OnePlus announced the inclusion of Project Treble support already with the release of OxygenOS 5.1.5.
On top of that, OxygenOS 5.1.6 brings support for VoLTE on IDEA India, along with the latest October 2018 security patches. VoLTE is particularly demanded across smartphones because of the increased voice clarity on call, along with keeping a consistent 4G data connection while on a call. Making a regular phone call means that your connection will drop to 3G or even 2G as most calls are made over either of those two connectivities. The update is going out via a staged rollout now, and using a VPN won’t get it to you any faster as it is now sent out on a per-device basis.
