The NVIDIA Shield TV is one of the most popular smart devices in the Android ecosystem. The reason behind this is that the device has been out for about 3 years now and is still receiving updates from the manufacturer. Just a couple of months ago, NVIDIA rolled out the Android Oreo update to the popular Android TV device. We see tablets and phones from big manufacturers on a daily basis that don’t have the kind of support that this little TV-box device has. Needless to say, NVIDIA really knows its user base, as most of them are clearly enthusiasts.
It has been more than a year since SHIELD TV received its first digital assistant, Google Assistant. Now, NVIDIA is rolling out Amazon Alexa support for the device. To enable the newly added assistant, you have to download the Amazon Alexa app from the Play Store, open it, and enable “NVIDIA SHIELD TV.” Currently, you can perform these hand-free actions on the device with the help of Alexa:
Getting Started
- “Alexa, turn on SHIELD.”
- “Alexa, turn off SHIELD.”
Controlling The Volume
- “Alexa, set volume to 80 percent on SHIELD.”
Opening Entertainment apps
- “Alexa, open Prime Video (on SHIELD).”
- “Alexa, open HBO NOW (on SHIELD).
Using Media Controls
- “Alexa, pause (on SHIELD).”
- “Alexa, play (on SHIELD).”
- “Alexa, next (on SHIELD).”
- “Alexa, previous (on SHIELD).”
- “Alexa, fast-forward ten minutes (on SHIELD).
Navigating SHIELD
- “Alexa, go to settings (on SHIELD).”
- “Alexa, go home (on SHIELD).”
- “Alexa, go to control settings (on SHIELD).”
Currently, the SHIELD TV and Alexa integration is only available in the US. There is nothing known about when the feature will be made available for other regions, but NVIDIA stated that they’re working on it. There is also a special deal going on to celebrate the update. Through November 10th, you will receive a free Amazon Echo Dot (3rd gen) with the purchase of NVIDIA SHIELD TV from Amazon or Best Buy. Amazon Alexa is one of the most popular digital assistants in the world with a fairly big user base. I’m sure many users will be happy to see their favorite platforms collaborate. Meanwhile, we show our respects to NVIDIA once more for caring about the user experience and never-ending the update window of now a 3-year-old device.
