LG phones are rarely the most popular of the bunch, but the company is still a veteran in the Android industry. They’re definitely not afraid to innovate with their G and V device lines. The LG V30, in particular, was an outstanding device with certain flaws, carrying top of the line specs as well as a display with greatly reduced bezels and a nice screen-to-body ratio. Now the company has officially announced two new, highly enticing offerings: LG V40 ThinQ, the latest flagship from LG, as well as the LG Watch W7, their newest Wear OS smartwatch.

It’s closer to compare the LG V40 ThinQ to the LG G7 ThinQ rather than to the LG V30. After all, the LG V40 ThinQ marks the introduction of the display notch to their V flagship line, and also shares many of its core specs with its early-2018 cousin, down to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, the 19.5:9 QHD+ display, and more. However, most of the similarities end there, as the V40 ThinQ is its own beast on many other aspects.
Probably the biggest selling point (and the most hyped up feature, too) of the LG V40 ThinQ is its camera setup. The device follows in the footsteps of other devices like the Huawei P20 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) by featuring a triple rear camera setup: a standard 12MP (f/1.5 aperture) sensor is aided by a 16MP 107-degree wide-angle lens (f/1.9 aperture) and a 12MP 2x optical zoom lens (f/2.4 aperture). This is further complemented by a dual front camera setup, featuring an 8MP (f/1.9) lens and a 5MP (f/2.2) wide-angle lens for a total of 5 cameras. We also have LG’s own AI camera features onboard here, which are said to be even more powerful now. LG has included a “Triple Preview” feature that allows you to see through all three rear cameras at the same time. This makes it easy to see which camera will take the best photo for the situation.
Compared the V30, the V40 camera has made some improvements. The main camera sensor has been improved by about 40%, increasing from 1μm to 1.4μm. The image sensor is more
than 15% larger than the V30. The f/1.5 aperture of the main camera delivers a greater depth of field, 50% less shutter lag, and a burst mode over 33% faster than the V30.
As for the rest of the specs, we have a 6.4-inch 3120 x 1440 P-OLED display. The bottom bezel still isn’t quite iPhone Xs-level yet, but it has been shrunk down to just 5.7mm. On the audio front, the V40 is equipped with a 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC and it does have a 3.5mm headphone jack. It also has the “Boombox Speaker” feature from the G7, which doubles the bass of conventional speakers by utilizing the internal space of the device as a resonance chamber. The phone also features 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage, expandable with a microSD card.

The LG Watch W7 is LG’s latest attempt at the Wear OS smartwatch game as well their overdue refresh to their previous smartwatches, the LG Watch Sport and the LG Watch Style. However, this is a different type of watch. It has mechanical hands along with the 1.2-inch display. The hands keep precise time, but they also can show additional information such as altimeter, barometer, stopwatch, timer and compass directions. One advantage of the physical hands is a “Watch-Only” mode, which essentially turns it into an analog watch with battery life up to 100 days. In standard mode, battery life is up to 2 days.
Unfortunately, the Watch W7 still has the Snapdragon 2100 processor, so you won’t get any of the improvements from the recently announced 3100. While the LG Watch W7 is probably not the greatest out there, it sure looks like a nice companion to the LG V40 ThinQ. The 1.2-inch 360 x 360 LCD screen is coupled with 768 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal storage, all powered by the latest version of Google’s Wear OS.
We also have water and dust resistance, Bluetooth 4.2, and a USB Type-C connector for charging. Overall, it seems like a nice enough refresh of the Watch Sport/Style, though we wish it had more up-to-date specs.
LG V40 ThinQ/LG Watch W7 Pricing and Availability
The LG V40 and LG Watch W7 are both pretty pricey devices. The V40 starts at $899, but it can go all the way up to $980 depending on your carrier. It will be available starting on October 13th and pre-orders are starting today. The Watch W7 will be available for $449.99 at Best Buy. Pre-orders will start on October 7th and shipping begins October 14th.
