While the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL have dominated a lot of the news cycle lately, many will argue Huawei has much more exciting devices on the horizon. The Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro were announced just last week and these devices pack a big punch. Unfortunately (and predictably), they will not be sold in the U.S.
This news comes straight from a Huawei spokesperson in a statement to Business Insider. While the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro will not be sold in the U.S., they will be compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile like most international devices. But it’s not going to be cheap to import these devices. The Mate 20 starts at €899 for the base configuration, while the Mate 20 Pro starts at €1049.
Huawei has been the subject of several stories regarding the U.S. government this year. In August, it was reported that U.S. officials were banned from using Huawei and ZTE devices. Before that, they were under investigation for violating U.S. sanctions on Iran. And the year started with U.S. lawmakers pushing for AT&T to cut ties with Huawei. This latest move doesn’t come as a huge surprise.
Still, that won’t dissuade some U.S. Android fans from going for these powerhouse phones. The Mate 20 has a big 6.5-inch display, triple rear cameras, 6GB of RAM, and the Kirin 980 processor. The Mate 20 Pro has a slightly smaller 6.4-inch display, triple rear cameras, 8GB of RAM, and the same Kirin 980 processor. There’s no shortage of features in these devices either. If you had your heart set on one of these phones, it might not be as easy as you hoped.
Note: Huawei has stopped providing official bootloader unlock codes for its devices. Therefore, the bootloader of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro cannot be unlocked, which means that users cannot flash Magisk/TWRP/AOSP-based custom ROMs.
