Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro announced with a pressure-sensitive in-display fingerprint scanner

Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro

Xiaomi is well-known for selling multiple variants of the many different smartphone lineups they have on the market. This can cause some confusion for those new to the enthusiast community as some may not know which variant to buy to get the best community developer support. This allows them to leverage the name of the series while offering something at multiple price points for the consumer. Today, the company made a big announcement by adding a couple of variants to their Mi 8 series. This one is the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro.

Xiaomi says they aren’t happy with the current level of features included in the regular Xiaomi Mi 8 (even the new model with 128GB of storage) and has put the Mi 8 Pro onto the table. The company says this new pro version takes the original one step further by adding a pressure-sensitive in-display fingerprint sensor. These in-display fingerprint sensors have begun growing in popularity these days. Even though they are traditionally slower than what we normally see on smartphones, it adds to the overall design by allowing for a cleaner design.

Xiaomi says the current crop of devices with an in-display fingerprint sensor waste energy as they are constantly pinging the screen to see if a finger is present. The included pressure-sensitive in-display fingerprint scanner of the Mi 8 Pro doesn’t do this as it only activates when it feels pressure has been applied to the display. Since the pressure also initiates the check for a fingerprint to scan, the company says this implementation is quicker than its rivals as well.

The Mi 8 Pro will be sold in three different colors (Sunset Gold, Black and Transparent Titanium) with sales starting in just two days on the 21st. Potential customers should expect to pay RMB 3199 for the 6GB+128GB and RMB 3599 for the 8GB+128GB variants. Those who are looking to spend a bit less also have the option to purchase the new Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite with the Snapdragon 660 SoC running the show.
