Samsung’s Galaxy S and Galaxy Note flagship lines are some of the best and most powerful phones out there. Brilliantly built from top to bottom, Samsung’s flagship phones are as feature-rich as they are powerful. But their midrange phones, while commercially successful in developing countries, lack most of the “bells and whistles” their higher end counterparts have. This is slowly changing, though. 2018 saw the introduction of Infinity Displays with 18.5:9 ratios to the Galaxy A and Galaxy J lines, as well as other features. Samsung has just launched the Samsung Galaxy J6+ and the Samsung Galaxy J4+, two more midrange phones taking cues from more expensive devices while keeping costs low.

The Samsung Galaxy J6+ takes certain design cues from the Galaxy A7 (2018), which was recently announced by Samsung. The fingerprint sensor, which was placed on the back of the regular Samsung Galaxy J6, was replaced for a side-mounted scanner. In other words, the fingerprint sensor is now embedded into the power button. The Galaxy J6+ also features a glass back, a trend that’s been increasing in frequency on phones with this price tag.
Side-mounted fingerprint sensors are definitely something new for Samsung. It’s quite likely this is the direction Samsung is taking going forward, as at least one model of the Galaxy S10 is rumored to come with a side-mounted sensor.
Both the Samsung Galaxy J6+ and the Samsung Galaxy J4+ come with Widevine L1 certification, too, something that’s normally omitted from phones around this price range.

At first sight, you may not be able to tell the Samsung Galaxy J6+ apart from a Samsung Galaxy J4+. This is because both phones are pretty much identical, at least when it comes to size and most of the specifications. Both phones have the same 6-inch HD+ 18.5:9 screen, the same physical body dimensions, the same glass build, and the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 SoC.
However, there are certain key differences. The Samsung Galaxy J6+ includes a dual rear camera set up in a similar fashion to the Samsung Galaxy S9+ (no triple camera shenanigans like the Samsung Galaxy A7 2018 to be seen here), while the Samsung Galaxy J4+ sticks with the classic single rear camera. The Samsung Galaxy J4+ also ditches the fingerprint sensor completely: There are no biometric sensors to be seen here. We also have slight differences in RAM, storage, and other factors.
