As we’ve learned more about the upcoming OnePlus 6T, the device has become more and more appealing. A possible launch through a US carrier? An in-display fingerprint scanner? Possibly an even smaller notch? What’s not to love? However, in a TechRadar interview with OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, something a little more controversial has been revealed – the OnePlus 6T will not feature a headphone jack. The company has also announced the Type-C Bullets at the same time, presumably aimed at those who will pick up the OnePlus 6T.
In the interview, Carl Pei revealed the reason for its removal, and it’s one that may have many scratching their heads. Apparently, removing the headphone jack has allowed for more space within the chassis of the device, which in turn allows the company to “put more new technology into the product.” One such improvement mentioned is increased battery life, presumably because a bigger battery could then be included. We already know that with an in-display fingerprint sensor too, we’re getting a slightly thicker phone.
While TechRadar was unable to gain any information on specifics regarding the increased battery life, Pei said that the improvements would be “substantial enough for users to realize.” The company made a similar promise with the upgrade from the OnePlus 3 to the OnePlus 3T, with a slightly bigger battery in the 3T.
To help soften the blow of removing the headphone jack, OnePlus will be releasing an updated version of their Bullets Wireless Headphones, and have also just confirmed the launch of the Type-C Bullets earphones. The Type-C Bullets have a new DAC, which can offer a higher dynamic range, higher signal-to-noise ratio, and a lower noise floor. USB-C to 3.5mm headphone jack converter will also be included in the box of the OnePlus 6T. It’s unknown if a set of earphones or headphones will be included in the box, but the company has never done so in the past.
Pei has cited the increased usage of wireless technologies of the driving factor in the headphone jack’s removal. Interestingly, a previous poll conducted by him on Twitter only a few months ago discovered that fans of the company were very much in favor of keeping it around. Apparently, 59% of the OnePlus community already owns wireless earphones of some type, which is only expected to rise. As other manufacturers began to remove it two years ago, it would have made little sense to remove the headphone jack given its ubiquity amongst OnePlus’ community at the time.
