With the OnePlus 6 receiving Android Pie and the OnePlus 6T on the horizon, you’d expect the company’s older flagships to be on the backburner. That doesn’t appear to be the case at all, as while the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T haven’t gotten it yet, they will be getting Android Pie in the future. In the meantime, they’re getting security updates every two months, a decent commitment that most OEMs don’t even abide by. OxygenOS 5.0.6 is here for the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T, and it comes with the latest September security patches. You can check out the full changelog below.
Security updates are extremely important for a number of reasons, mostly because they protect your device from exploits and vulnerabilities out in the wild. General bug fixes and improvements is incredibly vague, but it’s likely just some small changes made. There’s nothing really else of note to mention here, but the company does indeed deserve praise for continuing to update their older flagship smartphones. The OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T released in mid-2016, and are now two generations old. Hardware wise they aren’t that old, but companies rarely supply more than two years of updates. So far, they appear to be sticking to their Software Maintenance Schedule that they announced earlier this year.
The update is rolling out via a staged rollout, and you can’t use a VPN anymore to force the update. You can use Oxygen Updater though, as it will allow you to download the update package manually. Even if you aren’t rooted, you can then flash it via the local upgrade option in the System Update section of your settings. It’s a minor update, but it’s always worth updating for security patches. Let us know when you get OxygenOS 5.0.6 on your OnePlus 3 or OnePlus 3T down below.
