How Qualcomm is Enabling 5G

The next evolution of the wireless network infrastructure is almost ready for the mass public. Qualcomm reports that they are confident in commercial 5G networks and devices being available in 2019. This report comes after three major milestones were reached related to the development of 5G.

Over the past several months Qualcomm has been working on their large FPGA prototype systems. These systems are typically set up in a lab environment with very large equipment. These systems are used to test the 5G network technology as it is developed. However, recently the first ever 5G call was placed with Ericsson using Qualcomm’s smartphone form factor test device (picture) powered by the Snapdragon X50 5G Modem.

This graduation from using the FPGA test systems and successfully placing a call using the Snapdragon x50 means that the technology is nearly ready to be implemented into smartphones.

The first call being made on a commercial 5G network.

This milestone doesn’t end with Qualcomm, as Verizon and AT&T have built on this achievement and have accomplished a similar milestone where the first 5G call has been configured to their network. This is a crucial step as we are now seeing global operators taking 5G testing to actual field trials.

Qualcomm’s first 5G call is significant because while others are still using large FDGA type systems, Qualcomm is already working on mobile form factor devices like the X50.

Because of Qualcomm’s successful breakthroughs, 20 different OEMs and 18 operators have committed to using their technology to bring 5G to consumers. 5G networks will soon be a reality and Qualcomm is paving the way for it to reach commercial availability.
