Google Assistant routines now working again for third-party smart speakers

google assistant

Besides my Google Pixel 2 XL, the Google products that I use the most are the Google Chromecast and the Google Home. I have the regular Google Home and an Insignia Smart Speaker that doubles as my alarm clock. Both smart speakers are powered by Google Assistant and have basically the same functionality, although there’s a strange bug that started last week with the Insignia speaker, as well as all other third-party Google Assistant smart speakers, which caused custom routines to no longer work.

AndroidCentral reported on this issue last week after many users on /r/GoogleHome and the Google support forums began to complain about broken routines on third-party smart speakers. Earlier today, however, users reported that routines were working. Owners of third-party Google Assistant-enabled hardware from Insignia, Sony, and JBL state that routines started working for them without a firmware update on their device. If you own a third-party smart speaker with Assistant, check to see if routines are working for you.

For those of you who haven’t tried setting up any routines yet, I highly recommend you start by customizing the “Good Morning” and “Good Night” routines. You can customize routines from within the Assistant settings accessed via the Google App or the Google Home app. The Assistant settings will be getting an updated layout soon which will make finding these settings much easier.
