Google Assistant beats Amazon Alexa & Siri at understanding non-native English speakers

google assistant

This may seem obvious, but a virtual assistant is pretty useless if it can’t understand your commands. Even if you have to pause and speak slower and more clearly, the magic of a virtual assistant is lost. They work the best when you can just speak normally. Google Assistant is good at understanding multiple languages and a new report found it to be the best at understanding accents.

Vocalize.ai is a testing lab that measures automated speech recognition. Their most recent study put Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri, and Google Assistant to the test. Specifically, they tested how well they understand accents. This is something that is very important for non-native English speakers. The test included a native US accent, moderate Indian accent, and moderate Chinese accent.

First, they tested isolated word recognition. 36 words were spoken at a constant volume and distance from the speaker. They all did well with the US and Indian accents, but Google excelled at the Chinese accent. Google also stood out when the test was conducted with ambient noise in the background. Lastly, Google again was the best at understanding accents and varying volume levels. Check out the graphs below to see how the assistants compared.
