Fit the status bar in the Xiaomi Mi 8/Mi 8 SE’s notch with this mod

Xiaomi Mi 8

One of the greatest things about our forums is that developers and users can offer fixes to some annoyances in the stock software. Sometimes it’s by disabling a feature, fixing a bug, or maybe making a little cosmetic change which is exactly what one user has done for the Xiaomi Mi 8 and Xiaomi Mi 8 SE. The problem on these devices is that the status bar is shorter than the notch, so the top panel of the screen looks kinda weird when the screen is on.

Since you don’t need root or a custom ROM to install custom overlays on Android Oreo, one forum member was able to fix the issue. XDA Senior Member ztc1997 created an overlay for the Xiaomi Mi 8 and Xiaomi Mi 8 SE which fits the status bar in the notch area. All you have to do is install the APK file and then enable it with an ADB command to make the status bar same size as the notch, so it looks much better. Keep in mind that this fix only works for Android 8.0 Oreo and Android 8.1 Oreo, as Android 9 Pie prevents installing custom overlays. Here are some before and after screenshots of the fix, courtesy of XDA Senior Member boc11.

The instructions to install the overlay and the overlay APKs can be found inside the respective threads down below. Moving forward, this mod won’t help you on the Mi 8’s Android 9 Pie release which was just released in beta form in China. However, it will work on the Mi 8’s latest MIUI 10 stable version as that’s based on Android 8.1 Oreo. Enjoy this small fix while you can!
