There was a time when Motorola was one of the best OEMs when it came to rolling out software updates. That was before their acquisition by Lenovo, and while we can’t say whether the change in management played a role in the update situation for Motorola phones, there’s little doubt that the glory days of Motorola’s swift updates are over. Still, the company does release updates for their most successful products in their most popular regions, and that’s what we’re seeing today. The Motorola Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus are finally receiving an update to Android Oreo (Android 8.1).
The Moto G5 and G5 Plus originally launched with Android 7.0 Nougat. After soak testing the update for the G5 in Brazil and the Moto G5 Plus in Brazil and India, Motorola is ready to roll out the stable update in select regions. As expected, Motorola skipped the Android 8.0 Oreo update and went straight for Android 8.1 Oreo. Unfortunately, Lenovo only ships one major system update to for series G devices.
For now, the update is only available in Mexico for the Moto G5 and in India and Brazil for the Moto G5 Plus. Moto’s representative stated that as this is a staged rollout so not every user will receive the update at the same time. The Android 8.1 Oreo update will be available in other regions “in the future.”
Motorola likely expects to receive feedback and bug reports from these countries before rolling out the update globally. One thing that I can say for sure is that Motorola’s flavor of Android has always been stable for me. I’ve never really had any problems with them, and I expect to have the same experience using Android 8.1 Oreo on the Moto G5 Plus.
