Android TVs are becoming increasingly popular, with the likes of Xiaomi launching 4K HDR Android TVs recently. OnePlus has also signaled its intent to launch an Android TV in 2019. However, as of now, Android TV is still not ubiquitous as older televisions are still a majority. Google found the solution to this problem back in 2013 by launching an affordable digital media player named the Chromecast along with the associated Google Cast protocol. This allowed users of non-smart TVs to digitally stream content by using their smartphone. In the five years since its launch, the Chromecast has become a bestseller as it has become nearly ubiquitous.
Google launched the second-generation Chromecast in September 2015. Earlier this year, the third generation Google Chromecast was certified on the FCC with standard 2.4GHz Bluetooth ratio, possibly bringing support for Bluetooth controllers, keyboards, etc. An FCC filing later revealed that the device would have support for 5GHz Wi-Fi, potentially improving connection stability. Now, Best Buy seems to have sold the third generation Chromecast (which is unannounced as of now) to u/GroveStreetHomie on Reddit.
The Reddit user posted a photo of the new Google Chromecast comparing it with the second-generation model. The third generation model has a notably different design. First of all, the Chromecast’s shell is thicker than its predecessor. The glossy finish has also been swapped out for a matte exterior, and the Chrome logo has been replaced with the Google logo. Power is supplied over the microUSB port. Finally, the HDMI connector no longer magnetically attaches to the media player.
The 3rd generation Google Chromecast is scheduled to be launched on October 9 at Google’s fall event. It will be launched alongside the Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL phones and the new Google Pixelbook.
