Wear OS redesign includes Google Assistant feed and better notifications

A lot of people feel like Google doesn’t care about Wear OS anymore. The last big thing that happened to Google’s wearable OS was a name change. To prove they haven’t forgotten about Wear OS, Google has announced another redesign. They are shifting important things to the forefront and adding a few new goodies. Let’s take a look.

Google Assistant is now more prominent in Wear OS. You can get proactive and personalized help right on your wrist. Swiping right on the watch will open the Google Assistant feed, which has information that should be useful at the time. It could be a flight status, hotel reservation, traffic delays, or current weather. This is reminiscent of the early days of Android Wear when the home screen was Google Now cards.

Notifications are a huge part of what makes a smartwatch useful and Google is giving them more attention. Wear OS now makes it easier to browse and take action on notifications. Swipe up to open the new notification stream. You can use Smart Replies from the stream without tapping into the notification. Swiping down on the screen will open the Quick Settings toggles.

Lastly, to go with the redesigned Google Fit app and the rumor of a health coach, Wear OS is getting tighter integration. Swipe left to start a workout or see your progress throughout the day from Google Fit. The Google Fit watch face has also made a return. Google says all of these new Wear OS features will be rolling out over the next month. We’ll keep an eye on the update and let you know when it begins.
