Essential Phone gets YouTube pinch-to-zoom support

Essential Phone

The Essential Phone has been one of the hottest devices since its release, mostly because of all the deals that made it an affordable flagship phone. Along with the Snapdragon 835, 4GB of RAM, and 128GB of internal storage, it also sports a 5.71-inch display at 19:10 ratio. Unusual aspect ratios usually require a notch and the Essential PH-1 has a very little one. Unfortunately, traditional 16:9 videos always had black bars on this particular device, as YouTube’s pinch-to-zoom feature was not supported for it, until today.

Just a couple of hours ago, user osikiri on the Essential subreddit discovered that pinch-to-zoom suddenly started working for him on the Essential PH-1. He states that he’s using YouTube app version 13.34.50 running on Android 9 Pie. Google probably started a staged rollout of the feature. Some commenters mention that uninstalling the app, updating it, and then clearing the cache may force the activation of pinch-to-zoom. Some didn’t have luck trying this, but it’s still worth a shot.

Essential users have been requesting this feature for months already. There’s nothing more irritating than watching your favorite video with black bars. Now you can simply expand the video with the pinching gesture. We’re not sure why was the delayed so long, but, again, better late than never. As always, you can download the 13.34.50 version of YouTube from the APKMirror and sideload it manually.
