OnePlus 6 Design
On the front, you’re greeted by a large 6.28-inch 19:9 Full Optic AMOLED display. It’s the largest display of any OnePlus device, but the overall form factor is similar to the OnePlus 5T. There’s one key difference between the two devices, however: The OnePlus 6 has a display notch. We knew it was coming for the past one and a half months. You’ll be able to hide the notch via software, but it’s there. It’s part of the design—you either take it or leave it. Now that we’ve gotten that out-of-the-way, let’s talk about the actual design of the device.
In a departure from earlier models, the 6 will have an all-glass body. The Horizon Line is present around the edges of the phone, accentuating the curves of the device. The company claims that the reason they opted for glass is for better network connectivity (Cat. 16 LTE for 1-gigabit download speeds). For those of you concerned with the fragility of glass, the device has a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on both sides for added protection.
Donning the bottom of the device are the bottom-firing speaker (with audio output tuned by Dirac), the 3.5mm headphone jack, and the USB Type-C port. On the left side, you’ll find the power button and volume keys. The alert slider has been moved to the right-hand side of the device. On the back, the dual cameras are aligned vertically with the dual LED flash and fingerprint scanner right underneath.
There are three color variants: Mirror Black, Midnight Black, and Silk White. The Mirror Black has a thin layer of film underneath the glass to give it a sense of depth. The Midnight Black has a matte finish with a 0.1mm-layer of film with a jagged texture to produce an S-shaped line when the phone is reflected under light. Lastly, the Silk White model is a return to the design of the OnePlus One, with a shimmering effect achieved using pearl powder.
The device is said to be water-resistant for everyday occasions such as rain or a drop in a puddle, but the device will not withstand more extreme conditions. An exact IP rating was not offered.
OnePlus 6 Hardware
Just like earlier models, the OnePlus 6 is powered by the latest silicon from Qualcomm. Specifically, it has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 system-on-chip which is the highest-end Qualcomm chipset currently available. The CPU is paired with the Adreno 630 GPU. According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 845 CPU offers 30% higher performance and 10% more power efficiency, while the GPU offers 30% high performance over its predecessor. Thus, the OnePlus 6 is marginally more powerful than the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T which are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip.
Like the OnePlus 5 and 5T, the 6 has two different RAM variants with 6GB RAM and 8GB RAM. Both are LPDDR4X RAM chips. And also like its immediate predecessors, the storage chips on the OnePlus 6 are dual-lane and based on the UFS 2.1 flash storage specification.
The battery capacity is still 3,300mAh, though the battery life on the OnePlus 5T was never really a complaint for most users. Dash Charge technology makes a return and it’s still the same fast charging technology from previous generation models. That’s not a downside, though, given the stagnation in quick charge technologies and how well Dash Charge performs.
OnePlus 6 Camera
The OnePlus 5 was the first device from the company to feature dual rear cameras. The 5T followed suit, and now the 6 is the latest to continue the trend. The primary sensor on the OnePlus 6 is a 16MP Sony IMX 519 while the secondary sensor is a 20MP Sony IMX 376K. Both have a f/1.7 aperture. On the front, there’s a lone 16MP Sony 371 with a f/2.0 aperture. Electronic image stabilization (EIS) is present on both the front sensor and the primary rear sensor, but the primary rear sensor is also augmented with optical image stabilization (OIS).
As for camera software, the device has an improved HDR algorithm called “Advanced HDR.” Portrait Mode will be available on both front and rear cameras. Bokeh effects such as circles, hearts, and stars can be added to Portrait Mode selfies. Lastly, as previously teased, this will be the first OnePlus device to feature slow-motion video recording: 1080p at 240fps and 720p at 480fps.
OnePlus 6 Software
The device will launch with Android 8.1 Oreo-based OxygenOS 5. That means the device will be the company’s first to have Project Treble compatibility. It’s thanks to Project Treble support that Qualcomm was able to provide an early Android P-based Board Support Package (BSP) for its partners. As a result, the OnePlus 6 will have access to Android P Developer Preview 2 immediately after launch. This is the fastest that the company has offered a new software upgrade for any of its devices, and it’s a testament to how important Treble support is going forward.
OxygenOS features such as Face Unlock, full-screen navigation gestures, Gaming Mode with network boost, system dark theme, reading mode, App Locker, screen-off gestures, expanded screenshot, and more are present.
OnePlus 6 Pricing
The OnePlus 6 will be available in 3 different RAM/storage variants, though the availability for each depends on the color model. Also, devices sold in India and China have different LTE bands than models sold elsewhere (refer to the specifications posted earlier.)
