Razer Phone Android 8.1 Oreo official update now rolling out

2018 may become the year of the notch, but there’s another recent trend among smartphone companies that is making waves: gaming phones. Xiaomi’s subsidiary Black Shark recently released such a device. Other companies such as Asus and Nubia are expected to make gaming-centric devices. With every trend, however, there’s a trendsetter: for display notches, it was the Essential Phone, while for gaming devices it’s the Razer Phone. Introduced late last year, the Razer Phone is the company’s first smartphone. It offers a 120Hz screen (first of its kind in Western markets) and, at the time, top-tier flagship specifications. Given the release date, it was too late for the phone to launch with Android Oreo on board. But now, the company has announced that the official Android 8.1 Oreo update is available for the device.

The company previously rolled out an Android Oreo Developer Preview at the end of March in order to keep their promise of an Oreo update by the end of Q1 2018. The update notably brought Project Treble compatibility to the device and a few new features such as a lock screen double tap-to-sleep gesture, Dolby Atmos app, and a new display profile. Now, the official stable release is available for owners of the Razer Phone, so you won’t have to unlock your bootloader just to get the update. Just like the Developer Preview, the update brings February 2018 security patches to the device.

If you do choose to unlock the bootloader, you now have the ability to try out custom ROMs such as generic LineageOS 15.1 or Resurrection Remix. All you have to do is follow our tutorial on flashing a Generic System Image on any Treble compatible device. Best Buy Availability

According to the official press release, the smartphone is now available on BestBuy.com and eventually physical BestBuy stores. The device is already available for purchase via Razer.com, Amazon, and Microsoft stores.
