HMD Global, the company which licenses the Nokia brand, has been doing a stellar job at revitalizing the brand. The company already offers many different smartphones at all sorts of price ranges with respectable hardware and a clean, near-stock Android experience. While we had hoped the company would be more open to development, they are at least finally starting to abide by the GPL and releasing kernel source code for some of their devices. You don’t have to rely on a vibrant custom ROM community to get the latest versions of Android on your Nokia-branded phone, however, as the company has been releasing official Android Oreo updates for all of their devices rather quickly. Even the low-end Nokia 3 is starting to receive the 8.0 Oreo update today.

Of course, Android Oreo is old news by now since Android P is on the horizon, however, it’s not as if HMD Global is suddenly dropping Oreo on its users out of nowhere. Thanks to the Nokia Beta Labs program, Nokia 3 owners have been able to test out beta versions of the Oreo release for a little over a month. The last beta even added a Night Light feature, something that is missing on devices with technically superior hardware such as the Google Nexus 5X and Google Nexus 6P. Finally, with the official Oreo release, Nokia 3 owners will be able to enjoy this feature among many others including picture-in-picture mode, notification channels, Autofill API, and much more.
