On Thursday, Motorola, officially announced the Moto G6, Moto G6 Play, Moto E5 Plus, and Moto E5 Play at an event in Brazil. The common factor about these phones is the fact that they will officially launch in the US. (We have already done a hands-on with the phones.) Surprisingly, however, Motorola also launched another phone at the event, which will not be coming to the US. It’s called the Moto G6 Plus, and it’s the flagship device in the Moto G series lineup.
The Moto G6 Plus is the successor of the Moto G5S Plus, which was a mid-cycle refresh of the Moto G5 Plus. Its design language is the same as the Moto G6, and drastically different from the Moto G5S Plus. While the Moto G5S Plus was made of a metal unibody, the Moto G6 Plus switches to a metal frame and a glass back. It also has a taller 5.9-inch 18:9 display.

It features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 system-on-chip. The SoC is the successor to the Snapdragon 626, and it has eight ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.2GHz paired with the Adreno 508 GPU. It’s worth noting that this chip is used in the Moto X4 as well. In terms of performance, the Moto G6 Plus’ Snapdragon 630 is a decent step up from the Snapdragon 625 of the Moto G5 Plus and Moto G5S Plus. However, it won’t match the newer Snapdragon 636 in the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro.
The SoC is paired with 4GB/6GB of RAM and 64GB/128GB of storage, along with a microSD card slot that supports up to 128GB expandable storage.
The Moto G6 Plus has a 5.9-inch Full HD+ (2160×1080) MaxVision IPS LCD with an 18:9 aspect ratio. It has dual 12MP + 5MP rear cameras. The primary camera has a 12MP sensor with Dual Pixel autofocus, 1.4um pixel size, and an f/1.7 aperture. It’s paired with a 5MP depth-sensing secondary camera. The phone can shoot 4K video at 30FPS. There is an 8MP front-facing camera.
The phone has a water-repellent p2i coating, a front fingerprint sensor, and face unlock. It’s powered by a 3200mAh battery, which is bigger than the 3000mAh battery of the Moto G6, but smaller than the 4000mAh battery of the Moto G6 Play. 15W fast charging is supported via Motorola’s TurboPower charger, which is included in the box. It has Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 5.0. It ships with Android 8.0 Oreo.
In summary, the differences between the Moto G6 and the Moto G6 Plus are: SoC (Snapdragon 450 vs. Snapdragon 630), RAM and storage configurations, display size, rear cameras (the Moto G6 Plus has Dual Pixel autofocus, a brighter aperture, and bigger pixels), and battery capacity (3000mAh vs. 3200mAh).
As the Moto G6 won’t be launching in the US, US consumers will have to remain satisfied with the Moto G6 at a price point of $249.
The Moto G6 Plus is available today in Brazil and will be available next week in Mexico. It will roll out over “the coming months” in various countries in Asia Pacific, Europe and Latin America with a starting MSRP of €299, according to Motorola. This makes it the most expensive Moto G series device yet, and it continues a Motorola trend to make every new iteration of the G Plus series more expensive than its predecessor.
