Honor 8 Pro and Honor 9 Now Officially Receiving the Android Oreo Update

The Honor 8 was a popular device for the company when it was released back in April 2017 so they decided to release a new variant of the device, the Honor 8 Pro. Those in China know the smartphone as the Honor V9, but the hardware is the same for both devices. To continue the momentum of the Honor 8 series, the Honor 9 was released in June of 2017 with Android 7.0 Nougat and EMUI 5.1. Those who own either the Honor 8 Pro or the Honor 9 can look forward to its official Android Oreo update as we’ve seen multiple people showing proof that Android 8.0 with EMUI 8.0 is currently being rolled out.

There’s been a lot of buzz around EMUI 8.0 with Android Oreo since it was first announced. Many felt Huawei would go from their last version of the software (EMUI 5.1) and release version 6.0 but that wasn’t the case and they went all the way up to 8.0. The change was likely done to keep in sync with the current version of Android as that makes things much less confusing from both a marketing and social standpoint. This update comes with a lot of new features and is a big reason why so many Huawei and Honor fans have been excited for it.

Honor 8 Pro and Honor 9 owners don’t have to wait much longer as the rollout is currently happening. XDA Junior Member Arnab@ uploaded a screenshot of the OTA update page on their Honor 8 Pro and XDA Recognized Developer OldDroid uploaded the system settings page for the Honor 9 after they installed the update. Huawei has already told us the other devices they plan on updating to EMUI 8.0 and Honor has confirmed that EMUI 8 features are headed to the Honor 8, though it is still unclear if that means it will be based on 8.0 Oreo.

Also, now that these devices have been updated to Android Oreo with Project Treble support, owners of the Honor 8 Pro and the Honor 9 can now install a generic AOSP ROM if they’d like.
