Android’s newest features are very often limited only to the latest version of the operating system. This can lead many to miss out on some great features as not everyone uses custom ROMs or can afford to buy a new phone every year. Thankfully though, 3rd-party applications are able to bring some of these feature to older devices and that’s what Nova Launcher is doing with Adaptive Icons in its latest stable update to version 5.5.
The stable branch of Nova Launcher received an update to version 5.4.1 back in September of this year and it brought a number of new features. The first was a new search animation that originates from the bottom of the screen and goes up. This build also brought the new Sesame Shortcuts feature to the stable branch, a feature that was quite popular among those who had been using the beta version of the popular custom launcher.
Nova Launcher version 5.5 has been in beta since September as well with one of its first new features bringing Adaptive Icons to anyone running Android 5.0 Lollipop or higher. Since then, the developers have been working with the community to get the bugs ironed out and they’ve also been adding in some more features as well. A month later we saw a couple of new Pixel Launcher features added to version 5.5 of the Nova Launcher beta channel.
Now, the team is happy with the progress they’ve made and version 5.5 has been pushed to the stable branch. This update includes the Adaptive Icons feature for those on Lollipop or higher. Nova Launcher now intelligently reshapes legacy icons to adaptive, and it includes the Android 8.1 style pop-up menu. The Google search bar can now be added to the dock in this update, and you also have the ability to replace the search bar in the dock with any widget. The new update also comes with a number of optimizations and bug fixes.
