Nokia 8 Officially Announced, Snapdragon 835, 4GB RAM & Stock Android

HMD Global has been releasing Nokia phones which run Android for a bit now. They’ve previously released the low-end and mid-range Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 devices, but many have been patiently waiting for a flagship smartphone from them. We first hear about the Nokia 8 back in July of this year and even then we had reason to believe it would be the company’s flagship smartphone. Initial rumors suggested it would come equipped with Qualcomm’s latest high-end SoC, the Snapdragon 835.

Later that month, some alleged press rumors were leaked out and they matched what we had initially seen from the first leak. That source claimed the device would be announced on July 31st but that never happened. Whether or not that was the original plan, we soon saw multiple reports point to August 16th as the launch date. Then Nokia’s own website accidentally published a product page for the Nokia 8 and it was exactly what was shown in the leaked press render from earlier that month.

So the company held a launch event earlier today and finally made the device official. The Nokia 8 will indeed have the Snapdragon 835 SoC with 4GB of RAM (although one variant will have 6GB) and 64GB of UFS2.1 internal storage. There’s a microSD card slot for additional expansion and it also features what the company is calling Nokia OZO spatial 360° audio. The highlight here for many Android enthusiasts is that HDM Global is sticking with their stock Android OEM ROM and promises “fast updates.”

Their current lineup has been receiving security updates very quickly so we hope this continues as their portfolio expands. Both the front and rear of the device features a 13MP sensor with ZEISS optics, and we’re looking at a 5.3″ 1440p LCD polarized display protected with Gorilla Glass 5. The build of the Nokia 8 has been precision-machined from a single block of 6000 series aluminum and then given a polished mirror finish.

Nokia says the “Gloss Blue” variant will have 6GB of RAM with all other variants coming with 4GB of RAM; they list the colors available and we only see Polished Blue, Tempered Blue, Steel, Polished Copper listed. Lastly, it has a 3,090mAh battery, is IP54 certified, and features a 3.5mm ADJ headphone port. The phone is going on sale in Europe for €599 (~$700), and currently we know of no plans for a US release.
