Latest Android Platform Distribution Numbers Show Nougat Crossing 10% User base; Marshmallow Still on Top

Hot on the heels of the release of July’s Android security bulletin, Google has released latest numbers of Android platform distribution data. This data was recorded over a 7-day period that ended on July 5. Google notes that any version with less than 0.1% install base is not included in this list.

This month, Android Nougat finally breaks into double-digit territory. Nougat is now running on 11.5% of total active Google Play devices, showing a jump of 2% over the last month. This shouldn’t come as a surprise at all given that Android Nougat has been around for almost a year now. Many OEMs are rolling out their Nougat updates for their flagships and other higher end devices in their portfolio; and newer device releases are coming with Android Nougat out of the box. One point to remember though, both Android 7.0 and Android 7.1 are clubbed under Android Nougat.

Although Android Nougat continues to see a steady rise, its adoption rate is still slow when compared to Android Marshmallow, which only took 7 months to cross 10% mark.

Android Version Last Month’s Data (%) Latest Data (%) Change (%)
2.3 0.8 0.7 -0.1
4.0 0.8 0.7 -0.1
4.1.x 3.1 2.8 -0.3
4.2.x 4.4 4.1 -0.3
4.3 1.3 1.2 -0.1
4.4 18.1 17.1  -1
5.0 8.2 7.8 -0.4
5.1.x 22.6 22.3 -0.3
6.0.x 31.2 31.8 -0.6
7.0 8.9 10.6 (+1.7)
7.1 0.6 0.9 (+0.3)

Moving on, we have Android 6.0 Marshmallow which, despite the decline in its overall share, takes the top spot with 31.2% of total active installs. Android Lollipop (5.0 as well as 5.1) occupies second place with 30.1% of the total install base, showing a sharp decline of 0.7% over the last month’s data.

Next up, Android KitKat is installed on 17.1% of the total active devices, down 1% compared to the last month. Finally, Android Jelly Bean declined 0.7%, while both Android Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread declined 0.1%. Android 2.3 Gingerbread continues to be on 0.7% of devices with access to the Google Play ecosystem, which is surprising when you consider that Gingerbread was released in late 2010!
