Xiaomi CEO Promises Improvements on Product Shortage Issues

Xiaomi’s products, especially smartphones, are one of the best value purchases you can make in the budget segments. The Redmi Note series is Xiaomi’s best selling smartphone lineup in India, and both the Redmi Note 3 and the Redmi Note 4 earned praises in our reviews.

But both the Redmi Note devices had one common drawback: they are not available for purchase that easily. The demand for both of these products far exceeds the trickling supply, so much that every flash sale usually ends out of stock in mere seconds. With the occurrence of such flash sales being limited to roughly once or twice every week, you can see why Xiaomi is losing out on so many potential customers simply because it can’t produce smartphones fast enough. The scenario apparently extends out of India and the budget lineup, to China and the flagship Mi series too, as similar complaints are heard in the first few months of practically every device’s release.

Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun took to Weibo to reassure customers that quantity will be an area of focus this year. Xiaomi’s core tasks for this year will be innovation, quality and delivery. The company would continue pursuing innovation, but also commented that smartphones are the foundation of Xiaomi and will be taken seriously as well. Quality of the products from the company would also remain high, higher than its competitors. And finally, the company aims to work towards solving problems of low stock across its lineup.

While the claim is good, we are unlikely to see immediate effect of greater stock on the flagship lineup at least. The Mi 6 with its rumored Snapdragon 835 SoC will face the same issues, with any efforts of increasing stock on Xiaomi’s behalf only working to set off the product delays caused by using the Snapdragon 835. The budget lineup is much more likely to feel the effects after Xiaomi set up another assembling factory in India. In fact, the Redmi Note 4 is already feeling the effects with the introduction of a new pre-ordering system, although the higher specced variant is still out of stock. But the other two variants are available for pre-order, so that is a good start.
