Windows 10 Creators Update to Restrict Official Support to Just 13 Devices

Microsoft is rolling out the Windows 10 Creators Update to PCs globally, and it will soon be rolling to smartphones as well. However, the number of smartphones that will be officially supported and upgraded to the Windows 10 Creators Update has just received a trimming, bringing the number down to just 13 device models.

The lucky devices that do get to continue on with official support are:

  • HP Elite x3
  • Microsoft Lumia 550
  • Microsoft Lumia 640
  • Microsoft Lumia 640 XL
  • Microsoft Lumia 650
  • Microsoft Lumia 950
  • Microsoft Lumia 950 XL
  • Alcatel IDOL 4S
  • Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL
  • SoftBank 503LV
  • VAIO Phone Biz
  • MouseComputer MADOSMA Q601
  • Trinity NuAns NEO

These are the only devices that will be supported officially and will receive the Windows 10 Creators Update. Much to the disappointment of users of older devices, devices not on this list will not receive any future builds from Microsoft’s Development Branch as part of the Windows Insiders Program too.

Microsoft knows the news is not good, especially when you consider its inability to challenge Google and Apple in the mobile OS space. As an explanation, the company states:

We looked at feedback from our Windows Insiders and realized that we were not providing the best possible experience for our customers on many older devices. That helped us determine which devices we support for the Windows 10 Creators Update.

Users of unsupported devices who are part of the Windows Insiders Program and have received the Windows 10 Creators Update for testing and feedback can keep their device on the same “at their own risk knowing that it is unsupported“. Ironically, the feedback from these customers is the reason why Microsoft claims it dropped support for older devices.

What are your thoughts on Microsoft’s shrinking list of Windows 10 smartphones? Does Microsoft still have a chance at making it big in the smartphone market? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
