Twitter Launches Twitter Lite: Lighter (Mobile) Web App for Faster Performance and Minimal Data Consumption

One of the biggest social media players,Twitter, has launched a new version of its site designed for less-reliable mobile devices. In order to get help specific segments of its userbase, Twitter made a lite version of the service. Twitter Lite users will not have to worry about their data cap, internal storage or slow connections.

T Product Manager Patrick Traughber claims that it will start 30 percent faster than the original app and use up to 70 percent less of the data. Not every feature will be supported right off the bat. Users will still be able to tweet, view their timeline or send private messages. Video uploading, live relations or Moments are not supported at the moment. Nevertheless, those features are promised to be come in the future. T

The lite version of Twitter is not a standard application, though — it is a web app. It will still support push notifications on Android and can be added to the home screen as a shortcut. It’s a convenient way of keeping the service just a few taps away. Surprisingly enough, iOS users will not get notifications while using the lite version of the service.

Twitter Lite is expected to be used mostly in emerging markets like India and Africa, where fast LTE with plenty of data is a luxury. “Twitter Lite is a great way for many people in emerging markets across Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Africa to experience Twitter for the first time on their mobile devices,” said Patrick Traughber. “For example, today in India, we have partnered with Vodafone, one of the country’s largest telecom operators with over 200 million subscribers, to promote Twitter Lite to their 2G customers as a way to get live updates on matches, teams and players in the Indian Premier League as the cricket season kicks off.” Twitter Lite is available to use right now, all you need to do is visit mobile.twitter.com.
