Huawei P8 Lite with Kirin 620 SoC Gets its First Stable AOSP-Based Rom with Unofficial LineageOS 13.0

HiSilicon’s Kirin SoC are notorious for holding back devices on the development front, mostly due to a slow release of kernel sources, although the Kirin lineup itself is still impressive in terms of performance. On the other hand, phones built on Qualcomm SoCs tend to be much more developer friendly than Kirin devices thanks to the availability of sources.

Thus, many popular AOSP-based ROMs are simply unavailable on many Kirin-based devices. Users who purchase these devices are usually stuck on Huawei’s stock ROM running EMUI, which may or may not be your cup of tea. To be fair, EMUI has certainly gotten much better over time, but not all Huawei and Honor devices have the luxury of running the latest builds of EMUI.

But if you are an owner of the Huawei P8 Lite with its Kirin 620 SoC, you may be among the lucky owners who can flash an AOSP-based alternative on the device. Team OpenKirin has announced that their unofficial LineageOS 13.0 builds have now become stable enough for daily use.

This is the first third party ROM (based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow) for the device that has reached a decent level of stability with all key functionality of the device intact and working as intended. The only known bugs that exist are the lack of video recording functionality and dual SIM functionality.  So if these are functions that you can do without, the ROM should make for an excellent daily driver.

The OpenKirin team is also working on bringing over this stability to their LineageOS 14.1 (based on Android 7.1 Nougat) ROM as well. Bug squashing is on with full force with several key features like Audio, WiFi and Bluetooth already working well, so we can expect more good news to arrive soon. For now, users finally have a good, stable alternative to EMUI on the Huawei P8 Lite.
