Twitter has based its business on offering a free service to hundreds of millions of people for the past 11 years. The service is advertised constantly on mainstream TV shows, on the back of food boxes, and even the President of the United States finds himself in twitter arguments.
Still, user acquisition has become somewhat troubling for the company and its stock has continuously gone down over the past three years.
This is due to the company not being able to increase revenue as much as analysts had expected, and this is with the minor increase in monthly active users that was just reported last month. The company needs better sources of revenue as it doesn’t seem that enough is coming from advertisers. There are a number of 3rd-party Twitter applications that charge money for their product, and now a new report shows that Twitter is looking to see if it is in their best interest to do the same.
Twitter conducts surveys from its users to see if there is an interest in various ideas the company is throwing around. One such idea is a premium version of Tweetdeck that would offer valuable tools to professionals who are using Twitter on a daily basis. The survey did mention that it could be ad-free, which implies that Twitter may be looking into a subscription service.
We’re seeing other companies such as Microsoft offering similar subscription tiers for products and services of its LinkedIn property, so it wouldn’t be unheard of for Twitter to offer something similar. But again, this is all based on a user survey for an application that Twitter might not even be working on at this very moment. We’ll just have to wait and see if there is enough interest from marketers, journalists, and professionals who are looking for more than what Tweetdeck currently offers.
