honor 8 Coming with 5.2″ FHD Display and Kirin 950 SoC for $300

In an event in China, honor has taken the wraps off the honor 8, a device that is a stepped down version from the higher specced honor V8 that was unveiled a while back. The design of the device falls on the popular metal frame and glass back archetype that many premium phones adopt.

The honor 8 features a 5.2″ FHD display, being powered by Huawei’s Kirin 950 SoC. Unlike the honor V8, there aren’t variants on the honor 8 in terms of screen tech or SoC upgrades. The choice that you do get is in the RAM and storage department, with a 3GB RAM + 32GB storage variant being available along with a 4GB RAM + 64GB storage variant. Rest of the specs remain the same, including the 3,000 mAh battery, rear fingerprint scanner, USB Type C port and Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box.

In the camera department, the honor 8 runs a dual camera setup on the rear with two 12MP cameras and laser autofocus. There’s no Leica branding on these though, which was seen on Huawei’s P9 handset. For the front, the honor 8 packs in a 8 MP shooter.

For now, the honor 8 is restricted to the Chinese market and comes in five colors: Pearl White, Sunrise Gold, Midnight Black, Sakura Pink, and Sapphire Blue. The base 3GB RAM variant will cost you 1999 CNY ($299), while the 4GB RAM variant will set you back 2499 CNY ($374). The phone is available for preorder in China, and will go on sale from July 19th in the country. However, global availability of the device is unknown at this stage.

For what it costs, the device packs in quite a decent punch. Devices like these, which provide a lot of value at prices that are very pocket friendly, help to shape the competitive mid-end of the smartphone market. The honor 8 may urge other OEMs to step up their mid-range offerings.
