We’re pretty jazzed about the new honor 5X announced yesterday at CES. While technically it’s made by Huawei, it’s not branded as such. We’re excited about it because it’s an unlocked GSM phone with solid midrange specs (shown below) at a pretty unbeatable price point of $199, available for pre-order now from Amazon with an official launch on January 31. It has the proper bands to run on any major GSM network in the USA, and if you consider the competition (we’re looking at you Nexus 5X and OnePlus X), the honor 5X stands up particularly well if you’re comparing specs and price.
The phone itself is made from diamond-polished aluminum, granting it a quality “cool-to-the-touch-metal” feel that is usually reserved for devices that cost two or three times as much. It has a “second-generation” fingerprint sensor on the back (where fingerprint sensors should be, ahem), and it’s powered by the trusty Snapdragon 615 octa-core CPU along with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of ROM with microSD expansion up to 128GB. The screen is 5.5″ at 1080p, and the rear camera shooter does 13MP photos and 1080p videos. Again, this all sounds pretty great for a phone that is just $199. You can grab one in silver, gold, or black. You can see the official honor 5X feature listing on the honor website. Or, you can join in the discussion in our honor 5X forums on XDA. Within our forums, you’ll find a contest thread where we are giving away three honor 5X’s. Check out the contest thread to enter to win one!
Lastly, TK from XDA TV was able to do an unboxing and first impressions video of the honor 5X, which you can see down below.
