Is HTC Making the Next Nexus? Rumors of Two Nexus Devices Escalate

nexus render

We are barely a month into the new year, and the hype train for the next Nexus has already begun. Nevermind the fact that the two Nexus released this year, the Huawei Nexus 6P and LG Nexus 5X have had an overall positive response from the community.

While the 6P is widely regarded as one of the best phones of 2015, even managing to tame the Snapdragon 810 to a large extent, the 5X was a bit underwhelming as the successor to the much loved Nexus 5, mostly because it could not match the price-to-value ratio that the original Nexus 5 offered.

With the Snapdragon 820 on the horizon and Samsung already folding up its sleeves in preparation of the Samsung Galaxy S7, the flagships of 2016 are just about to roll. With them comes along a new Nexus, atleast. The rumor mills have begun their operation, with the big question currently being: Who gets to take home the Nexus?

HTC, apparently.

The rumors began with a Weibo account claiming that HTC is on its way to snag not one, but two Nexus handsets in 2016. This would come as a surprise to many, considering the success of the Nexus 6P made by Huawei. The tipster claims that the new phones will sport a 5″ and a 5.5″ display. Being but a rumor, it was taken with a bucketful of salt.

The steam in this hype train is picking up again. This time, it’s via XDA Recognized Contributor LlabTooFeR‘s Twitter account. LlabTooFer has been a good source of HTC related leaks, being on-point on various occasions in the past, like for example, with the HTC One A9 launching with Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

In a recent tweet, he mentions what are alleged to be codenames for the HTC Nexus devices. The two devices are internally codenamed T50 and T55, which ties up with the previous rumor of two Nexus devices, one with a 5.0″ display, and the other with a 5.5″ display.

As with other rumors relating to Nexus devices so early in 2016, it is advisable to take everything with a pinch of salt. Things can and will change from now till the devices are released in late Q3 of 2016.

The scenario of HTC making not one, but two Nexus devices in the year seems far fetched and plausible at the same time. HTC has had experience with making Nexus devices, with the Nexus One and the Nexus 9 being made by them. On the other hand, HTC’s disappointing results in the recent months and the company’s renewed focus on Virtual Reality makes them an unlikely choice for pinning hopes on a device that will be very keenly watched by Android enthusiasts all over the world.

Will HTC actually make two Nexus devices in 2016? Is Google planning to expand the Nexus portfolio? How many Nexus phones and tablets will we see in 2016? We hope to get the answers to all these questions in the coming months.
