LTE-U was originally developed by Qualcomm but lately it has seen a massive push by wireless carriers like Verizon. The new system would allow carriers to utilize unlicensed spectrum (like WiFi’s 5GHz band) to help improve the mobile experience. However, tech companies like Google, Microsoft and Comcast (among others) oppose such technology as they feel it will disrupt the customer’s pre-existing WiFi networks.
