There are a lot of phones on the horizon for the usual frenzy of end-of-year updates. Even with the improvements expected in devices such as the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, it becomes difficult to refrain from comparing these upcoming smartphones with one of the best Android performers of the year: the OnePlus 7 Pro.
Before we briefly revisit some of our thoughts on the OnePlus 7 Pro, we first want to tell you about some great back-to-school deals you’ll see from OnePlus, which also includes the solid OnePlus 6T.

OnePlus 6T
While the OnePlus 7 Pro is the talk of the town (and we have given a lot of reasons above that justify the same), OnePlus also continues to sell the OnePlus 6T in select regions. While the OnePlus 7 Pro and the OnePlus 7 are better smartphones, their existence does not take away from the existing allure of what was OnePlus’s best flagship phone just before May 2019.
The OnePlus 6T was a great smartphone when it was launched. And with the launch of the OnePlus 7 series, the subsequent price drop to $549 has made it an even sweeter value purchase. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC continues on its impressive run and is now considered Qualcomm’s second-best smartphone chip in terms of performance. Several of the headlining software features, such as Fnatic Mode, Zen Mode, Screen Recorder, DC Dimming have either already arrived on the OnePlus 6T, or will come over soon. You also get access to a wider color range than what was available at launch, meaning that you can also pick up the McLaren Edition or the Thunder Purple if you so wish.

Since the OnePlus 6T was fairly future proof when it was launched, it has aged very well and can now be considered as a very solid purchase at its current price.

OnePlus 7 Pro
The OnePlus 7 Pro, launched in May 2019, is OnePlus’s flagship release for this year. OnePlus usually sticks with a two-phone-per-year release philosophy, but this year, the company came out with two phones simultaneously in the form of the OnePlus 7 and the OnePlus 7 Pro. While the OnePlus 7 featured incremental upgrades over the OnePlus 6T, OnePlus did go all out on the OnePlus 7 Pro, bestowing upon this device the strongest set of hardware specifications that the company has ever put in a phone.
The OnePlus 7 Pro features the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 with a Kryo 485 “prime” core clocked at 2.84GHz, three more Kryo 485 cores clocked at 2.42GHz, and for efficiency, four Kryo 385 cores clocked at 1.8GHz. The Snapdragon 855 comes with the Adreno 640 GPU, and the phone also comes with LPDDR4X RAM in 6GB, 8GB, and 12GB capacities and UFS 3.0 Dual-Lane storage in 128GB and 256GB options. The only true competition to the OnePlus 7 Pro in performance comes through gaming-focused smartphones such as the ASUS ROG Phone II, which go massively overkill on their performance through dedicated vents for cooling and by employing the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus SoC. We have tested out the OnePlus 7 Pro through extensive benchmarks — and the scores have been impressive. This was before the launch of the Snapdragon 855 Plus though, but even then, the phone’s lead in the scores will let it put up a strong fight against the upcoming crop of phones with Snapdragon’s gaming-focused SoC.
OnePlus 7 Pro Review – This is the Best Smartphone so far in 2019
We have also put OnePlus’s flagship through extensive gaming sessions and even through GameCube and Wii emulation, and the phone performs admirably in those regards too. There is an observation to be made with regards to gaming in 1440p versus gaming in 1080p on the device, as performance is obviously and noticeably better in 1080p. This drawback will apply universally to all devices with these specifications though. With the OnePlus 7 Pro, you can simply drop down to 1080p from within the Display Settings, so you get the flexibility of gaming in either scenario and prioritizing what works out for your preferences. Either way, this flagship comes out as one of the top choices to be made for a gaming smartphone, despite not coming along with the tag.

OnePlus 7 Pro Gaming Review: The (almost) perfect gaming phone
The drawback with gaming-focused smartphones is that they usually fail to become attractive all-around smartphones. The OnePlus 7 Pro is not tagged as a gaming smartphone, and it attempts to deliver as a solid performer across all relevant aspects of a smartphone. The design on the OnePlus 7 Pro is beautiful, with equal parts of a mesmerizing charm and an understated look. OnePlus has gone with three colors so far: the Mirror Grey color, known for being an evergreen choice for those who want a shiny, black-colored device; Nebula Blue color, for those who want a more matte look and prefer going for a blue gradient look across the back; and the Almond color, for those who prefer the gold-adjacent beige and gloss.
Once you take your eyes off the back of the phone, you’ll find that the front is equally as mesmerizing. Mishaal termed the display on the OnePlus 7 Pro as the best aspect of the phone, and we can certainly see why. The front of the OnePlus 7 Pro is almost entirely adorned with the 6.67-inch Fluid AMOLED display that curves off on the sides. Because of this curved display, there are virtually no bezels on the device, apart from a tiny bottom bezel and an even smaller top bezel housing the earpiece. The bezel-less aspect of the phone isn’t even its best part — the best standout feature for the display is the fact that you now have a 90Hz QHD AMOLED panel. OnePlus has used a quality panel on the 7 Pro, enough for the phone to get a solid A in our extensive display analysis thanks to its excellent tone response, very good color accuracy, and minimal black clipping.
OnePlus 7 Pro Display Review — Finally Flagship Quality
The one area where the OnePlus 7 Pro falters is the camera setup. Despite packing in some key hardware that looks great on paper, the OnePlus 7 Pro fails to come out on top as a consistent and confident performer. A lot of the criticism for the camera also comes from the price tag of the device. As this flagship from OnePlus sits firmly within the flagship segment and does not boast about “affordability” in its true sense, the phone fails to live up to the expectations of a consumer who has paid top dollar. The company is listening to its users though, and recent updates have improved the camera performance by a good margin. You can use a Google Camera port to get more “social media-ready” images, but the stock camera may give users a chance to complain. There’s still a lot of improvements to be done in this regard, especially when you see other Chinese companies like Huawei push the envelope of innovative and useable camera technology. Hopefully, future updates to the device continue to improve upon this key feature, as they have in the past.
The Good and the Bad about the OnePlus 7 Pro
The OnePlus 7 Pro comes out on top in most key areas. But it also manages to do a lot of the smaller things just right. The company finally opted for a stronger vibration motor on its device, and you can feel the difference that a quality component can make towards the comprehensive experience. The hardware buttons on the device feel great to touch and press; the speakers on the phone are good; the USB Type-C port is always appreciated, and OnePlus’s Warp Charge fast charging technology deserves fair praise of its own. OxygenOS too has gone to become one of the best custom Android skins available on the market, with the right balance of features and customizations, while staying within sight of the stock Android experience.
However, talking about a OnePlus device on XDA would also be incomplete without mentioning the excellent developer community support that previous OnePlus devices have enjoyed and that the OnePlus 7 Pro enjoys too. OnePlus released the kernel sources for the OnePlus 7 series promptly. As other OnePlus devices before itself, the OnePlus 7 Pro is also very easy to root because of the ease of unlocking its bootloader. OnePlus also has a liberal attitude towards bootloader unlocking as the company allows the same to be done without affecting the warranty of the phone. OnePlus has also run developer seeding programs in the past, which have attracted prominent developers into creating quality work for the phones. All of this leads us to a bountiful variety of ROMs, kernels and other modifications for the OnePlus 7 Pro.

If you’re still craving for more, you can also sideload yourself a helping of official Android Q beta releases before the next dessert version drops as a stable release. The OnePlus 7 Pro will also receive official Android Q from OnePlus, of course.
